A post-doctoral research position in synthetic chemistry is available at the University of Melbourne for a period of 24 months. The successful applicant will be involved in a new research program on metal-promoted bond functionalisation of organic substrates. The program is a joint venture between the research laboratories of Professors Richard O’Hair and Paul Donnelly in the School of Chemistry, University of Melbourne and Professor Allan Canty at the School of Physical Sciences, University of Tasmania. The aim of the program is to use a mechanisms-based approach to develop new methods to synthesise amides and thioamides. The appointee will carry out synthesis of metal complexes and use electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry, NMR monitoring experiments and computational chemistry to investigate the mechanisms of their bond functionalisation reactions in solution and the gas-phase.

We are looking for a candidate with a PhD in a field relevant to inorganic, organometallic or organic chemistry and with experience in the synthesis and structural characterisation of compounds.
