The Opportunity
The School of Electrical, Mechanical and Infrastructure Engineering (EMI) integrates the expertise and capabilities that allows us to setup large-scale tests and deploy promising ideas quickly and broadly. We are a vibrant community of internationally recognised researchers focused on addressing major challenges in power systems, computation networks, electronic devices and materials, and systems engineering.  At EMI, you'll find smart people, big problems, and plenty of opportunities to make a real difference in the world.

To keep working on our fundamental research, we now have exciting opportunities for a Level A or B Research Fellow to lead and develop the next generation of smart and sustainable prefabricated building systems, innovative digital design frameworks for off-site manufacturing and on-site assembly, novel materials and multi-functional building components, as well as intelligent building maintenance and management technologies.

This team is part of some of the most ground-breaking and exciting work at the University of Melbourne.

The role
As the Research Fellow, you will play an integral role in our Prefab Group within the Department of Infrastructure Engineering.  You will embed your research expertise into the life of the School through the development of high-quality, productivity-driven research by carrying out the relevant design, modelling and experimental work and will support the lead Chief Investigators in the ongoing project management, monitoring and evaluation of the Prefab groups research milestones. You will also be given the opportunity to be involved in supervision of students working on related projects.

To be successful, it is essential that you have experience in the development of research projects and collaborations, and the development of new techniques. You will have an emerging track record in the outlined below areas, including quality research outputs such as publications in peer reviewed journals.

We’ve already been joined by some of the best minds, and we’re now inviting talented Research Fellows that have applied experience in one or more of the following areas in performance of:

  • Structures (steel, concrete, timber, composite)
  • Structural connections
  • Advanced structural analysis
  • Building materials
  • Building physics
  • Façade engineering
  • Structural health monitoring

What you’ll need:

  • PhD degree in Civil, Structural, Mechanical or Material Engineering,       
  • Experience in experimental testing including field monitoring
  • Proven experience in fostering partnerships resulting in successful collaborative research outcomes
  • Relevant industry experience and/or experience as a researcher in a lab, maintaining lab equipment and accurate research records, communicating research concepts and be an outstanding contributor to our team and projects
  • Superior written and analytical skills including the ability to conduct critical appraisal of relevant literature and write academic reports of publishable standard
  • Experience in a leadership role within a research team (Level B)
