CONSUMER RESEARCHER

Job no: 0046979
Work type: Fixed Term
Location: Parkville
Division/Faculty: Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences
Department/School: Melbourne School of Population and Global Health
Salary: $69,148 - $93,830 (Level A)
Role & Superannuation rate: Academic - 9.5% superannuation

Our project aims to co-produce a model for peer support in emergency departments (EDs) for people presenting with mental distress. The project has been funded by Interdisciplinary Seed Funding from the Melbourne Social Equity Institute, the University of Melbourne. Developing a model for practice that directly draws on the unique contributions of peer workers will complement and enhance current understandings of appropriate ways to support people in mental distress. This includes how to recognise issues in the physical environment and respond appropriately. We are employing a research assistant (preferably a consumer academic/researcher) to undertake a scoping review of the literature (including the grey literature) regarding peer support in EDs and also investigating non- clinical models of support for people coming to EDs in mental distress. The research assistant will also be required to submit an ethics application in order to enable the team to conduct interviews with a range of key informants (including ED staff, consumers and carers) to gain new perspectives and discuss the findings and implications of the literature review. We will also undertake site visits. The RA will be supported in this work by an expert panel. Half of the members of the panel have lived experience of mental ill health and recovery. Other members will be academics and service providers with expertise in health, psychiatry, nursing, social work and architecture, planning and design. The team will also include a Phd student.
