The University of Melbourne is consistently ranked among the leading universities in the world, we are globally engaged; comprehensive; research-intensive; and committed to responding to the major challenges of our time.

The Melbourne School of Engineering (MSE) is strongly committed to supporting diversity and flexibility in the workplace. Improving the representation of women is necessary in our goal to innovate and to strengthen MSE’s reputation as a best-in-class centre of research.

About the School of Computing and Information Systems (CIS) We are international research leaders with a focus on delivering impact and making a real difference in three key areas: data and knowledge, platforms and systems, and people and organisations.

At the School of Computing and Information Systems, you'll find curious people, big problems, and plenty of chances to create a real difference in the world.

This is a six-month position as a post-doctoral Research Fellow in natural language processing. The research will specifically address information extraction from the chemical patent literature. Topics of interest include relation and event extraction, co-reference resolution, and analysis of the semantics of tables. The precise priorities for the research will be determined based on project requirements, but will involve natural language processing of chemical patents, with a particular desire to develop novel approaches to biochemical information extraction that take advantage of deep learning. The project is in collaboration with Elsevier BV, a leading scientific publisher and developer of the Reaxsys database. In addition to access to substantial domain knowledge that is enabled through this collaboration, we will be working closely with the Content and Innovation team at Elsevier to develop solutions that have substantial practical applications, and the Research Fellow will assist in organising a community shared task related to project objectives.

The Research Fellow will join an ongoing project team, with one current post-doctoral Research Fellow and one PhD student already in place. A second PhD student is expected to join soon. The Research Fellow will be based in the natural language processing group in the School of Computing and Information Systems at the University of Melbourne and will work under the direction of Professor Karin Verspoor, and other team members Professor Tim Baldwin, Associate Professor Trevor Cohn, and Professor Lawrence Cavedon from RMIT University.

This position provides an opportunity for an emerging researcher to build their research career. This is a unique opportunity to engage with a strongly collaborative industry partner that has a history of translating innovative research into impactful solutions, as well as to gain supervision and organisational experience.
