About Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and the Nectar Research Cloud

The ARDC is a national eResearch program funded by the federal government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS). The purpose of the ARDC is to provide Australian researchers with a competitive advantage through data. The ARDC is a transformational initiative that enables the Australian research community and industry access to nationally significant, leading edge data intensive eInfrastructure, platforms, skills and collections of high-quality data.

The Nectar Research Cloud is one of the main services provided by the ARDC.  The Nectar Research Cloud is a federation of multiple nodes distributed across multiple sites around Australia/NZ. The Core Services Team provides technical leadership and operational services and support to all these sites.

The position is within the Nectar Core Services Team, which is mainly employed through The University of Melbourne.

About the role

The Nectar Research Cloud is powered by OpenStack and provides computing resources to researchers across Australia. You, as a Cloud Development and Operations Engineer, will be passionate about the ongoing DevOps practice and the reality of running a large distributed system that is the Nectar Research Cloud, enabling the next generation of research capabilities across many research disciplines. You will work as part of a small, friendly, dynamic team on building and running of cloud platforms, the integration of storage and network services, monitoring, as well as helping inform and guide how to best build, deliver and operate cloud services.

We’re looking for a strongly driven DevOps engineer who loves automation. You will become familiar with the OpenStack, python, containers, Puppet and CI/CD automation processes (if not already!). We value open source and as community players there will be opportunities to contribute upstream to OpenStack and other related projects. Your Linux systems administration, problem solving, and communication skills will help you thrive in this role.

Please note that this position is available as a UOM level 7 or UOM level 8 opportunity. The level of appointment is subject to the successful candidate's qualifications and experience.

What you will be doing

  • Design and implement services and infrastructure to support the Nectar Research Cloud
  • Maintain existing Nectar Research Cloud platforms (virtualization, container orchestration, APIs, infrastructure, backups, and more)
  • Participate in the broader Nectar Research Cloud community across Australia and New Zealand
  • Participate in incident response and blameless postmortems
  • Configuration and change management

About you

You will have a computing or engineering degree or equivalent experience.  You will love solving problems in complex distributed systems, using automation tools such as Puppet and Ansible, and writing scripts and code in languages such as Python and Bash.  You will be a keen Linux user and you will be using that on your desktop machine.

You will care about community - in particular our end user and partner site operations communities.  You will be able to work independently but also be able to engage with other team members and the broader Nectar Operations team at remote sites.
