The position of Speech Writer is located in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor (OVC) and reports to the Manager, Policy, Projects & Speeches. You will work as part of the Policy, Projects and Speeches team as well as with other members of the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, and the broader University.
The Speech Writer will help to articulate the vision and ideas of a Vice-Chancellor with a broad range of interests and a busy speaking schedule. The Speechwriter must be able to distil the essence of an idea and create a powerful message in speeches and written documents.
In addition to the University community, major audiences include alumni, government, religious, community, corporate, cultural, and academic leaders, and professional associations.
You must have a demonstrated track record of outstanding writing skills, excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to balance competing demands in a dynamic environment.
The Speech Writer must be able to work directly with the Vice-Chancellor and members of the OVC and Senior Executive, to determine what points, themes, positions, or messages should be covered. You will be expected to conduct your own research on the topic, and to flesh out this framework with anecdotes and examples. The ability to accept feedback and comments on the different drafts of the speech, and be able to incorporate the proposed changes into the draft, is essential. The ability to prioritise, manage your time and meet strict deadlines are vital skills for this position.
