OPERATIONS RESEARCH CONSULTANT

Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Faculty of Science

Salary: $50,191 - $68,109 p.a. plus employer superannuation contributions of 9%

The Melbourne Operations Research (MORe) , established in 2003, is a consulting practice based at the Department currently under the directorship of current Department member (Dr Heng-Soon Gan). MORe draws on the expertise of a number of academics from various areas within the University, and has established partnerships with bodies external to the University including Monash University, University of Newcastle, MASCOS; this variety reflects the multidisciplinary nature of Operations Research.

You will undertake consulting work to business and industry in Operations Research and support the Director in all aspects of the practice, including infrastructure development, marketing and promotions, responding to RFPs, contract negotiation (liaising with the University's legal services), project management, client liaison, mathematical analysis, mathematical modelling, prototyping, system implementation, client training and report writing.

You may also be expected to assist in the development and delivery of short courses or workshops or training for the business, government and/or industry sectors as well as assist in the day-to-day administration of the practice.

To be successful in obtaining this position you must possess or be able to demonstrate the following:

Applicants should have a Bachelor's or equivalent degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline.

A high level of proficiency in computer programming, preferably in C, C++ or Visual Basic.

Highly developed written and oral communication skills.

The ability to interact with and make presentations to industry clients.

The ability to model and solve mathematical problems arising in industry, particularly employing techniques from Operations Research.

Able to work independently, to manage your own work, and to be proactive in the conduct of a consulting practice.

The ability to work as part of a team, consisting of members with diverse technical backgrounds.
