About - Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences

The Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences is one of the leading schools of Psychology in Australia, with active research programs in Cognitive and Behavioural Neuroscience, Clinical Science, Cognitive and Mathematical Psychology, and Social and Personality Psychology. The School has recently established research hubs in Complex Human Data, Decision Science, Ethics and Well-being, and Brain and Mental Health and has also developed major initiatives in behaviour change (Melbourne Centre for Behaviour Change) and contemplative studies (Centre for Contemplative Studies). We have a large undergraduate teaching program and diverse postgraduate research and professional training programs.

About the Role
The School is seeking an outstanding researcher with expertise in computational or mathematical psychology to join the Complex Human Data Hub and contribute to the school’s teaching program. The CHDH has areas of strength in memory, perception, categorization, decision-making, language, cultural evolution, and social network analysis. We welcome applicants from all areas of mathematical psychology, computational cognitive science, computational behavioural science and computational social science and are especially interested in applicants who can build upon or complement our existing strengths.  We particularly encourage applicants whose theoretical approaches and methodologies connect with social network processes and/or culture and cognition, or whose work links individual psychological processes to broader societal processes.

Responsibilities include:

  • Participating in research independently and as a member of the Complex Human Data Hub (http://
  • Producing quality conference and seminar papers and publications
  • Teaching in the School’s undergraduate, fourth-year and/or graduate psychology programs
  • Participating in activities that strengthen the links between the University and the community and which help in the dissemination and utilisation of psychological knowledge.

About You
You will be an ethical scholar who values diversity and works effectively with individual differences with strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders (internal and external) and work collaboratively. You will have a willingness and ability to contribute to the activities of the School through administration, engagement, and service to the discipline. 

You will also have:

  • PhD or equivalent research higher degree in Psychology, Cognitive Science or a cognate discipline
  • Evidence of significant contribution to independent and team based research in mathematical psychology or computational cognitive/social science
  • Familiarity with cutting edge advances and/or current sophisticated methods in mathematical psychology or computational cognitive/social science
  • Demonstrated success in obtaining research funding appropriate to your academic level
  • Strong, independent and original publication record in high-impact peer-reviewed journals
