Bioinformatician – Invertebrate Genomics

About the Role
Joining the Pest and Environmental Adaptation Research Group (PEARG) and the Climatic and Metabolic Ecology Lab (CAMEL) at the University of Melbourne.

You will contribute advanced analytical skills to multiple ARC Discovery projects focusing on invertebrate genomics. This role demands the consistent delivery of high-quality data analysis, pipelines, and visualisations, crucial for genomic characterization of model and non-model species.

Collaborating across institutions, they will lead computational analyses exploring hybridization in invertebrates and the evolutionary significance of parthenogenesis, aiming to deepen insights into biodiversity generation and fitness advantages in harsh environments.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Contribute to internationally competitive research projects, resulting in publications in high impact journals
  • Identify and learn emerging analytical methods in functional genomics to understand potential genes and families involved in climate change adaptation.
  • Contribute to academic papers and other scholarly outputs to a high academic standard in accordance with the research expectations of the University of Melbourne
  • Assist with teaching, training, mentoring and supervision graduate students and research staff in the group.

Who We Are Looking For
You will excel in data management, quality control, statistical and spatial analysis, and creating impactful graphics for publication. Additionally, you should possess familiarity with contemporary molecular laboratory techniques and proficiency in genomic analysis.

You will also have:

  • A degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Science and / or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education and training
  • Demonstrated experience in relevant bioinformatics techniques, platforms, and technologies, as well as experience working on high-performance computer clusters.
  • Familiarity with population genomic software for establishing adaptive patterns and identifying DNA decay
  • Processes involved in genome assembly with the ability to collaborate with other bioinformaticians undertaking assemblies.
  • Identifying and modelling species climate niches.

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University.
