About the Role
The Laboratory Officer manages teaching laboratories within the School of Agriculture, Food & Ecosystem Sciences and Melbourne Veterinary School. Working closely with the Manager, Teaching Laboratories, and academic staff, the role provides technical support for teaching activities, ensures lab safety and compliance, and advises on resources for lab programs. The position focuses on maintaining operational excellence and improving service delivery without direct involvement in research or teaching content.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Provide technical support for teaching activities by coordinating and maintaining the planning, preparation, setup and pack down for classes.
- When required contribute to the development of practical classes and provide advice on practical student activities.
- Work effectively as part of the team and with the managers to develop and implement efficient work methods.
- Act as the First Aid Officer and Warden for the building in which the position is primarily based; maintain training and certifications relevant to these roles.
- Maintain laboratory facilities, equipment and materials in optimal operational condition, consistent with all relevant compliance frameworks and accreditation requirements.

Additionally, you demonstrate the ability to work autonomously under general direction and collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team to achieve shared goals.
You will also have:
- A relevant degree or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training in the field of biology in particular virology, microbiology, animal science and/or plant pathology.
- Demonstrated knowledge, expertise and experience in scientific procedures and the safe operation and troubleshooting of relevant equipment in a teaching laboratory setting.
- A proven ability to identify, develop and deliver systems for service improvement and problem resolution and experience in delivering high-quality customer service.
- Implement process improvements and oversee assigned improvement activities and projects.

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University.
