About the Department

Established in 1862, the Department of Anatomy and Physiology has a strong record of excellence in research and teaching. It was formed through the amalgamation of the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience and the Department of Physiology, bringing together a remarkable breadth of research expertise. This integration strengthens the Department’s focus on neuroscience, metabolism and diabetes, and cell biology, enabling it to remain at the forefront of scientific research into developmental, degenerative, and chronic diseases.

With a critical mass of researchers, the Department is positioned as a key partner for Medical Research Future Foundation (MRFF) and other large-scale grant opportunities. The Department also leads in teaching innovation, including digital learning, active learning approaches, and custom education programs for health professionals and industry. Initiatives such as the Melbourne Academy of Surgical Anatomy, and cutting-edge physiology research facilities further establish the Department’s reputation for excellence.

About the Role

As Professor and Head of Department, you will provide strategic leadership and management, fostering a collegial and productive environment for research and teaching. You will be responsible for driving the Department’s research agenda, enhancing educational programs, and engaging with key academic, clinical, and industry partners to advance the University’s global reputation.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Academic Leadership: Provide vision and direction for the Department, aligning with the University’s strategic goals.
  • Research Excellence: Drive high-impact research programs, secure competitive funding, and foster national and international research collaborations.
  • Teaching Innovation: Oversee curriculum development and introduce innovative teaching and learning modalities.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build relationships with clinical, professional, and industry bodies to expand research and teaching opportunities.
  • Operational and Financial Management: Ensure effective resource allocation, staff development, and compliance with University policies.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will be a distinguished academic leader with:

  • An international reputation in research within Neuroscience, Metabolism and Diabetes, Cell Biology, or related disciplines.
  • A proven track record of securing competitive grants and publishing in high-impact journals.
  • Extensive experience in leading research teams, fostering a culture of collaboration and excellence.
  • Demonstrated teaching expertise, with experience in innovative learning modalities.
  • Strong leadership, mentorship, and strategic management skills within a university setting.
  • A PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant field and significant experience in higher education leadership.

This position is a continuing Professorial appointment with the Head of Department term being fixed for an initial five years.
