Environmental Compliance Officer

About the Role
This role oversees the Environmental Management System within Campus Management, ensuring its integration with the University of Melbourne’s policies and systems. You will provide strategic support and expert advice on environmental compliance, impacts, and objectives, while managing specialised services and assigning environmental responsibilities to department staff.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the delivery and maintenance of the Environmental Management System (EMS), ensuring alignment with ISO14001 and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborating with relevant stakeholders to develop policies, procedures, training, and awareness initiatives related to environmental management and compliance.
  • Monitoring and optimising EMS performance, conducting reviews, audits, and reporting to management on compliance, effectiveness, and improvement opportunities.
  • Engaging with internal and external stakeholders to ensure environmental objectives are met, integrating EMS into existing business systems where appropriate.

Who we are looking for
You will have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences. Your excellent interpersonal skills will enable you to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders, building and maintaining successful relationships. You will also be committed to continuous learning and staying up to date with emerging trends in environmental management.

You will also have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, science, sustainability, or a related field, along with extensive experience in a similar role.
  • Proven experience in designing and implementing environmental management systems (EMS), including systems integration and adherence to policy, procedures, and legislative requirements.
  • Expertise in conducting internal EMS and compliance audits, developing corrective actions, and addressing non-conformances.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental legislation, the ability to monitor changes, and ensuring compliance obligations are met, while delivering training, awareness programs, and competency assessments for staff.

This role requires the successful candidate to undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.
