Senior Project Manager, Capital Works

About the role

Are you an experienced construction Project Manager looking to grow your career while getting a real work-life balance? We are looking to hire multiple Senior Project Managers to manage and deliver capital projects to the value of $20m - $200m for the university’s faculty departments.

You will get the opportunity to make your mark and work flexibly on a variety of projects which will shape the future of the University of Melbourne's campus. This role will allow you to nurture your leadership skills, as you will mentor and develop a small team of Project Managers.

Reporting to Design & Construction Director of Campus Management – Project Delivery, you will provide timely expert advice in the development of property, infrastructure, building and precinct development strategies, business cases and concept designs through the approval gateway. You’ll be involved in the full life-cycle of the projects, with accountability from the approval gate through to project delivery, transition to operations and handover.

There is a direct progression path to senior leadership from these positions for the right candidates.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Management of specific facilities projects, including the design and construction, ensuring the projects are successfully delivered within budget, schedule, specifications, safety requirements and fit-for-purpose.
  • Managing the pipeline and workflow of projects across delivery teams, including working with the Enterprise Project Management Office to better manage and monitor projects.
  • Manage consultant and contractor procurement processes, award and management of contracts including contractual disputes through UoM legal processes.
  • Ensure a safety-first culture and governance is implemented which focuses on safety of the University community, contractors, consultants and public.
  • Establish and implement a high degree of communication with project owners, stakeholders, students and external stakeholders.

Who we are looking for
Collaboration, emotional intelligence and attention to detail are vital skills for this role.

Your highly-developed stakeholder engagement and leadership skills enable you to manage strategic relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders and motivate and lead a team of professional resources. You have excellent commercial acumen and with ability to develop operational strategies.

You will also have:

  • Tertiary qualifications or progress towards a postgraduate qualification in Property or Construction related field and/or extensive relevant project management and cost control experience.
  • Proven experience in project management delivering capital works projects valued from $20 - $200 million delivered in an operational environment.
  • Extensive experience in the management of projects designed by consultants and trade contractors and extensive experience in project management of multiple building projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated ability in preparing project briefs on building works and translating to plans and scope of work specifications, budget estimates and programs.
  • High level knowledge of Australian standards, building codes, OH&S standards and regulations and demonstrated experience in applying them to building projects.
  • High level computer skills in applications such as Microsoft Excel, Word and Project.

This role requires the successful candidate to undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. Campus Management – Project Delivery portfolio aims to be the provider-of-choice in the delivery of transformational projects for the University of Melbourne and it is responsible for managing the implementation of projects in accordance with the University’s Project Delivery Framework.  In addition, it provides expert advice to the university in relation to construction, project and asset delivery. The broader team comprises of project managers, schedulers, Risk and OH&S managers, feasibility support resources and/or project support resources to manage the delivery of university projects.
