As a Bioinformatician for the Australian Fish Genomics Initiative, you'll play a crucial role in developing high-quality genomic resources for Australia's diverse fish species. You'll have the opportunity to create and implement advanced bioinformatics pipelines, collaborate with leading researchers nationwide, and contribute to international biodiversity efforts. This role offers you the chance to shape the technical direction of a groundbreaking initiative while working at the forefront of genomics and conservation science.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Develop Bioinformatics Solutions: Create and deploy scalable analysis pipelines for high-quality genome assemblies and annotations of Australian fish species.
  • Collaborate Across Disciplines: Work closely with researchers, sequencing providers, and national digital infrastructures to enable cutting-edge genomic data generation and analysis.
  • Ensure Data Quality and Accessibility: Monitor outputs to meet international standards and integrate data with global genomics resources, adhering to FAIR principles.
  • Engage with Stakeholders: Advise on technical strategy, communicate project achievements, and contribute to training initiatives in bioinformatics.

You may be a great fit if:

You are a skilled bioinformatician with expertise in deploying and optimising scalable workflows for high-performance computing environments, possessing excellent communication skills and a passion for biodiversity research.

You may also:

  • Have a qualification or equivalent experience in bioinformatics, biodiversity, or related fields.
  • Possess experience in fish genomics or population genetics, or a willingness to develop this expertise.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in NextFlow and/or Snakemake for workflow development.
  • Have a track record of collaborating on national or international research infrastructure projects.
  • Show expertise in genome assembly and annotation, particularly related to biodiversity and conservation genetics.
  • Have experience in delivering workshops or providing support to researchers in bioinformatics.

Your new team – Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences

The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health Sciences has an enviable research record and is the University of Melbourne’s largest faculty in terms of management of financial resources, employment of academic and professional staff, teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate (including research higher degree) students and the conduct of basic and applied research. The Faculty’s annual revenue is $630m with approximately 55% of this income related to research activities.

The Faculty has a student teaching load in excess of 8,500 equivalent full-time students including more than 1,300 research higher degree students. The Faculty has approximately 2,195 staff comprising 642 professional staff and 1,553 research and teaching staff. 

The Faculty has appointed Australia’s first Associate Dean (Indigenous Development) to lead the development and implementation of the Faculty’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), which will be aligned with the broader University – wide plan. To enable the Faculty to improve its Indigenous expertise knowledge base, the Faculty’s RAP will address Indigenous employment, Indigenous student recruitment and retention, Indigenous cultural recognition and building partnerships with the Indigenous community as key areas of development..
