This position is a professional development opportunity for University of Melbourne staff. Only current Continuing, Fixed-Term, and Casual staff are eligible to apply. About the Role
The Prospect Researcher is a crucial role in supporting the University's fundraising efforts, tasked with identifying potential donors and understanding their capacity and willingness to support the institution. Responsible for gathering and analysing financial and biographical data, the role involves creating concise reports and profiles to aid senior staff in fundraising activities. Additionally, the Prospect Researcher develops comprehensive records on key stakeholders and client groups to enhance the University's engagement and relationships within the community.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct fundraising research using in-house and external records including database, web and other electronic resources, to identify individuals, foundations and corporations capable of providing significant support to the University.
  • Analyse a range of business and financial resources to establish wealth indicators pertaining to a prospective major donor’s capacity to give.
  • Help determine cultivation and solicitation strategies, by matching prospective major donors to suitable fundraising proposals and programs.
  • Prepare detailed profiles synthesizing and analysing advancement research information, including bullet, short profiles and full profiles.


Who we are looking for
You will excel in this role if you possess strong analytic skills, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret data effectively. Your exceptional organisational skills, coupled with outstanding written communication abilities, will enable you to manage tasks with competing deadlines and produce clear, concise reports for senior staff.

You will also have:

  • A degree in a relevant discipline, preferably Humanities and Social Sciences.
  • Familiarity with a broad range of electronic resources, including web search engines and directories; and public and commercial research tools, offering biographical, professional, corporate, financial, current affairs and other information.
  • Initiative, sound judgment and discretion in dealing with confidential and sensitive information on alumni and donors; understanding when to seek counsel of more senior staff.
  • Strong analytic and interpretive skills, and attention to detail.

This role requires the successful candidate to undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.
