About the Role
The Workshop Manager will manage the day-to-day operations by prioritising, allocating and scheduling resources by managing a team of technicians to deliver a range of services within the workshop.

Through the FEIT2025 strategy, the faculty has set a clear mandate to build on its already strong research and teaching & learning performance to cement its position as a leader in addressing everchanging global challenges.

The FEIT strategy includes investment in major campus developments, such as Fishermans Bend, Melbourne Connect, Next Tech Building over >$750m over a 10-year period and beyond. With this significant investment a step-change is required in how the faculty utilises laboratory space, and how lab users are supported to ensure they maximise the benefits from new campus space.

To enable this, a step-change is required in how the faculty utilises workshop, laboratory and teaching space. As the Workshop Manager, you will provide leadership to the technicians in the workshop, drive collaboration, and ensure seamless alignment between workshop operations, laboratory operations and faculty objectives.

This key role reports directly to the Infrastructure Operations Services Manager, FEIT.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Participate as a member of the FEIT Infrastructure Operations management team to ensure technical services and use of spaces support teaching and research objectives.
  • Provide direction to and oversee the performance of the workshop services team deliver design consultation and fabrication services to students, academics, faculty approved student competition teams or clubs and industry users.
  • Provide professional consultative support to the workshop team to support quality practice and a continuous improvement ethos.
  • Manage the installation, storage and maintenance of workshop and other technical equipment to meet safety obligations.

We are seeking a dynamic leader with exceptional leadership and communication skills to manage a team of diverse technicians and collaborate with the faculty’s academic leadership team. You will leverage your technical expertise and decision making abilities in a complex environment, ensuring adherence to OHS regulations and scientific integrity within multidisciplinary workshop spaces.

You will also have:

  • A trade qulaification in fitting and turning or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and educational training supporting teaching and research facilities in the higher education and/or industry R&D sectors specific to mechanical workshop practices.
  • Proficiency in engineering design software, computer-aided design (CAD) tools, and other relevant engineering software.
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully leading and managing a small team to deliver quality services and support personal development.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to effectively build and maintain positive relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience in operationalising new technical environments within Engineering & IT disciplines that support teaching and research and/or industry R&D.
  • Experience managing OHS requirements in multidisciplinary workshop space.

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.

The Infrastructure and Operations Services function delivers a range of services across infrastructure projects, facilities management, workshop services, student learning spaces and Telstra Creator Space. The function’s key objective is to manage the day to day facility services across the faculties technical and teaching and learning spaces, ensure the smooth transition into new facilities and the facilitation and support of academic and research activities within the FEIT.
