As a Lecturer in Political Science (Teaching Specialist) you will play a pivotal role in delivering engaging and high-quality teaching within the Politics and International Studies undergraduate and postgraduate programs. You will coordinate and deliver subjects, contribute to curriculum development, and supervise student research projects at the honours and graduate coursework levels.

This role offers an opportunity to collaborate with a passionate academic team, design innovative learning experiences, and engage with students. Some teaching responsibilities will be delivered intensively and in teams, requiring strong communication and interpersonal skills.

While there is some flexibility in the breakdown of work activity, a Level B Teaching Specialist should expect 70% of their time to be devoted to teaching, with the remainder split between scholarship/research, and leadership and service.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Subject coordination duties including the development of Learning Management System sites and subject guides, preparing and marking assessments, selecting and supervising tutors, and consulting with students
  • Subject delivery, including preparing and conducting lectures, tutorials and seminars
  • Curriculum design and innovation, including cross-disciplinary approaches
  • Development of technology-based teaching, learning and assessment programs and resources
  • Undertake supervision of theses at Honours and Masters level
  • Scholarly activity that supports, enables and disseminates individual and collaborative research findings and insights from teaching practice within the discipline and more widely

We are looking for a committed and engaging educator in Political Science with a completed PhD, strong understanding of diverse learning needs and a passion for creating inclusive and dynamic learning environments. Strong organisational skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks, and an emerging research record that enhances teaching practice will be well regarded.

You may also:

  • A completed PhD in Political Science or a closely related discipline
  • Demonstrated specialisation in a research field that complements the Political Science  discipline’s existing research profile and practice at the University of Melbourne
  • Ability to supervise honours and graduate coursework theses
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the learning orientations of a diverse student cohort, combined with the ability to apply this knowledge and understanding to create inclusive learning environments
  • An emerging record of pedagogical and/or academic research that informs and enhances teaching practice
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage one’s own time effectively, work collaboratively, administer multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines successfully
