About the Role the Senior Business Development Manager (SBDM) role at the University of Melbourne offers an exciting opportunity to drive growth and innovation in professional education. As a key member of the Research, Innovation and Commercialisation (RIC) and Melbourne Professional Education (MPE) teams, you'll play a pivotal role in expanding the University's presence in the professional education sector across Australia and internationally. This position demands a strategic thinker with exceptional relationship-building skills, commercial acumen, and the ability to develop scalable custom education solutions. Your responsibilities will include:
- Drive the execution of the MPE Business Development Plan, working in close collaboration with the Business Development Director, MPE team, academic and professional staff, and RIC colleagues to achieve revenue targets, increase impact, and deliver on strategic priorities. Using commercial skills and sector knowledge, work collaboratively with colleagues to identify, scope and drive appropriate commercial engagement opportunities with new and existing
customers partners, including the development of large, complex multi- Faculty and University wide opportunities.
- Proactively engage external stakeholders to identify industry, market, and organisational needs, to develop customised professional development programs that support workforce capability uplift. Demonstrate extensive experience and success in business development activities and executing strategic growth initiatives. Experience in the education sector and custom education solutions an advantage.
- Utilise exceptional stakeholder engagement skills to cultivate strong, collaborative relationships with both internal teams and external partners.
- Develop and manage a comprehensive pipeline of existing and new opportunities, ensuring sustainable growth for MPE.
- Contribute to strategic objectives by collaborating effectively across teams to achieve impactful outcomes.
Who we are looking for We’re seeking a dynamic, self-starter with a proven track record in business development and an exceptional ability to network, build strategic relationships and significantly contribute to the growth strategy. The ideal candidate will be a natural collaborator and influencer, capable of identifying and seizing new opportunities, with the drive and commercial acumen to transform ideas into successful, revenue-generating partnerships in the professional education space.
You will also have:
- Undergraduate degree essential in a relevant discipline coupled with substantial commercial experience in a business development or commercial role, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education.
- A strong track record of generating new business and negotiating and closing commercial opportunities,
- Excellent relationship management skills as evidenced by a well-established professional network.
- Demonstrated capacity to lead and facilitate teams/resources to respond to commercial opportunities. A constructive and contributing team player. Strong project management skills.

This role requires the successful candidate to undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. Research, Innovation and Commercialisation (RIC) is the central facilitator of research funding in the University, taking advantage of the full diversity of research funding opportunities.
Innovation and Enterprise (I&E) supports the successful delivery of large, mission-focused complex, non-competitive grant and the new MRFF schemes, interdisciplinary research and enterprise initiatives involving multiple parties e.g. industry, granting bodies, advocacy groups, government. Major current focus areas are the new MRFF scheme, Melbourne Connect precinct development (and subsequent precinct developments) and developing a clear front-door canvasing new top-down industry partner relationships. The team also provides support for Chancellery-lead strategic initiatives.
