About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity for a professional with expertise in research and ethics to take on the role of Research Ethics Adviser at our University. As the REA, you will have the opportunity to provide expert advice, education and training to researchers to ensure high quality and standards are applied to their animal ethics submissions.

Reporting to the Manger, Animal Ethics, this role offers the chance to be a trusted advisor to researchers and the Animal Ethics Committees, influence decision making at the application planning stage, and support the lifespan of animal teaching and research projects by working closely with other sectors within the office such as Research Ethics Officers and Animal Care and Use Advisors. This role offers a unique insight into leading research practices and the chance to collaborate with researchers, students, and ethics committees to protect and enhance the university's reputation. By providing advice, support, and mentoring, you will contribute to improving the quality control and compliance within the animal ethics framework, working closely with various stakeholders in the Office of Research Ethics and Integrity.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Critically evaluate complex scientific concepts and proposals against established ethical frameworks and legislation to assess the suitability of an application to be submitted to the Animal Ethics Committee.
  • Provide constructive feedback to researchers and students to improve application quality prior to review by an Animal Ethics Committee.
  • Triage and escalate animal incident reports. 
  • Provide coaching, training and mentoring to researchers to develop application writing skills, ethics knowledge and a thorough understanding of guidelines, policies and legislation to assist in increased quality of animal ethics submissions.
  • Provide assistance to researchers and students in responding to issues identified by the Animal Ethics Committee and facilitate communication between their Academics Divisions and the Committee.

Who we are looking for
We are looking for an individual who demonstrates strong organisational skills and the ability to advise, influence, and report to internal stakeholder. You also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be highly analytical, and motivated by the opportunity to work in a dynamic setting while effectively planning, prioritising and managing work. 

You will also have:

  • A postgraduate degree in a scientific discipline with relevant experience or an equivalent mix of extensive experience, training and specialist knowledge.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting research or teaching using animals.
  • Ability to critically evaluate complex scientific concepts and proposals against established ethical frameworks and legislation.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide mentorship and guidance to key stakeholders in the interest of developing ethical research and producing high-quality research outcomes.

This role requires the successful candidate to undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.
